This place has been open around 5 years and I came soon after they opened over 4 years ago to try their dumplings and remembered them as being really good. I recently checked their menu and noticed they also did a full Chinese menu, of not only the typical American food, like General Tso’s and all the nasty, sticky, sweet fried stuff – But they also had some of the original, Chinese dishes, like Cumin Chicken, which is a fav of mine. So, when in the area I stopped in for lunch today.
They weren’t busy on a Friday at lunch time, only having one other table sat when I came in. The guy working the counter was very friendly and helpful. When I asked how good and original their Cumin Chicken was he immediately replied that it’s done American style, so it’s not as good as it should be… Against his advise I went ahead and ordered it anyway. I started with their cucumbers though.
The cucumbers came out first and looked and smelled really good… the flavor was great! Not sure what all was in the sauce, it looked kind of thick and really brown. Had all the normal flavors and they were robust, which I like. Definitely not the garlic, nor the spicy style cucumbers though, but they were good.
Next up was the Cumin Chicken and it looked bland when it arrived. Flavors proved the looks – it was on the bland side. The onions weren’t quite as caramelized as they normally are from a hot wok either, which helps bring out the sweetness and makes for a great bite to have a piece of chicken with a piece of onion. Overall, I was disappointed. I miss Peter Changs in Central Park and have been trying to find those flavors since they left. It’s terrible that so many people didn’t patronize that great place when it was open because they wanted American Chinese food… for that they need to stick with Panda… For real Chinese food, embrace and try it where it is – it’s sooo much better and it’ll help keep places around that don’t cater to the American palate, rather keep true to their roots and the food the way it’s intended to be made. Unfortunately, this place has sold out too.
