If I could give Louie’s Backyard ten stars, I would.
I’ve been coming here for more than 30 years, and it remains my favorite restaurant not only in Key West, but quite possibly in the entire United States. Over the decades I’ve celebrated special occasions here, brought countless friends and family members here, and enjoyed many quiet dinners by myself overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. No matter how many times I visit, it never loses its magic.
Tonight was another perfect experience. I started with a bowl of conch chowder, enjoyed a glass of Albariño, and followed it with a beautifully prepared New York strip served with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and garlic butter. Every bite was excellent.
What truly sets Louie’s apart, however, is the setting. My favorite place to sit is on the Afterdeck overlooking the water. There are few experiences anywhere in Florida that compare to enjoying dinner, a glass of wine, and the ocean breeze while watching the waves roll in beneath the palms. It’s one of those places where you find yourself slowing down and appreciating the moment.
Whenever friends visit me from the Tampa Bay area and want to experience the very best of Key West, this is the restaurant I bring them to. Without exception, every one of them understands immediately why I love it so much.
Great restaurants serve good food. Exceptional restaurants create memories. For more than three decades, Louie’s Backyard has done both for me.
Five stars. If Key West disappeared tomorrow and I could save only one restaurant, I’d save Louie’s Backyard first and figure out the rest later.
Louie’s Backyard came highly rated, and the food did deliver, but the service did not. The fish was cooked well and the flavors were well balanced. The cocktails were also quite enjoyable. The warm bread and butter is also a very appreciated touch. However, besides the busboys who are attentive and were quick to bring more water or bread, our waiter was practically nonexistent after taking our order. I would have ordered another cocktail if he came back between delivering the food and the check, but he never did. I would recommend Louie’s for the food, but we had better service pretty much everywhere else in Key West except here.
Three Stars — and here’s exactly why.
We visited for the first time based on strong recommendations, and the experience was genuinely split between two extremes. Let’s start with the issues, because they nearly cost this place a customer before we even sat down.
The front-of-house staff — Jason in particular — left a poor first impression. We arrived as walk-ins hoping to secure a last-minute reservation and were met with a coldness that felt dismissive and unwelcoming. “Unprofessional” is the word that comes to mind. This wasn’t a one-off observation: other diners voiced the same frustration to us, and we watched several walk-up guests grow visibly fed up and leave while we waited over an hour. The pattern was hard to miss. Management should be aware that this behavior at the front door is actively turning away guests — and that the restaurant’s website contributed to the confusion, as the information there is unclear and in need of an update.
That said, once we were seated, the experience transformed completely.
Our server, Patty, was exceptional — quite possibly the best server we encountered during our entire time in Key West. Her recommendations were spot-on, her attentiveness was genuine, and the care she brought to the table is exactly what hospitality should look like. She is a true asset to this restaurant.
The food was phenomenal. The atmosphere was wonderful — warm, inviting, and immaculately clean, restrooms included. This is clearly a well-run kitchen and a beautiful establishment.
Which is precisely why the front-of-house issue stings. The gap between the experience at the door and the experience at the table is significant, and it is the sole reason this visit earns three stars instead of five. We will return — the food and Patty alone make it worth it — but management needs to address the welcome guests receive before they ever reach their seats. Fix that, and this place is a five-star experience without question.
Stopped in at Louie's Backyard for a few apps and drinks along with the awesome view of the ocean. Nina took great care of us. We enjoyed the conch fritters and octupus, both were excellent. One of our favorite "upscale" yet casual restaurants on the beach / ocean here in Key West, a total gem!
Louise’s Backyard is a true culinary delight. The dishes are exceptional—delicious, beautifully plated, and made with fresh, high-quality ingredients.
We greatly enjoyed the local fish with cumin and aioli sauce as main dish, but the grilled shrimp, and the octopus & garlic sausage with cannellini beans and citrus bagna cauda as starter, and the Boston lettuce & watercress salad with Maytag blue cheese, apples, and spiced pecans deserve high praise in their own right.
The service is very attentive and friendly, and the refreshing ambience with outdoor seating by the ocean makes the experience even more enjoyable. A perfect 5/5 dining experience!
