Border Town is one of Greenpoint’s newest Mexican restaurants, already generating a lot of buzz after a successful run of pop-ups around the city. The concept centers on northern-style Mexican cooking, with a particular focus on flour tortillas made with pork lard. thin, supple, and deeply flavorful.
We visited on a Sunday evening as walk-ins and were quoted about a 55-minute wait. Since the restaurant isn’t on Resy or OpenTable, that’s something to keep in mind if you plan to come during peak hours. Fortunately, there’s a bar next door where we waited until we were called.
We were seated at the bar, where bartenders Alana and Julia were friendly and welcoming, creating a relaxed and casual vibe that fits the restaurant well.
The standout dish of the night was actually the simplest one: a flour tortilla with refried beans and crumbled cheese. The tortilla itself, rolled thin and cooked with pork lard, was fantastic. It immediately reminded me of a Honduran baleada, and sometimes the most straightforward dishes are the ones that shine the most.
We also tried the special of the day, which featured stewed chicharrón. That dish was rich and flavorful and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The carne deshebrada taco (shredded beef) was solid but didn’t quite reach the same level, good, but not particularly memorable.
The Tacos de Nada were a pleasant surprise: crispy on the outside with soft potatoes inside, showcasing how simple ingredients can be elevated with the right technique and balance.
The only real issue during the meal was with service timing. Our order of Frijoles con Veneno was forgotten and ended up arriving about 30–40 minutes later than expected. That dish also only comes with three tortillas and it’s a lot of beans and meat. I think it should be maybe five tortillas minimum for that dish . During that time, there wasn’t much communication about the delay. A quick update, or even just acknowledging the mistake, would have gone a long way. It felt like a small logistical slip in an otherwise smooth operation.
That said, Border Town still delivers where it counts: great tortillas, approachable prices, and a lively, casual atmosphere. Once they tighten up the pacing and communication, the restaurant is likely to continue thriving.
I can easily see this place becoming even more popular in the summer months, especially if outdoor seating becomes part of the setup.
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. I’d happily come back. but maybe earlier on in the day.
