After standing in a line that looked like half of Illinois had the same lunch plans, I finally got my hands on the legendary Italian Beef with a side of real potato fries... and I can confidently say: The wait wasn't just worth it, it was part of the experience. The beef was unbelievably tender, juicy without being a soggy mess, and packed with bold, savory flavor in every bite. The giardiniera added the perfect crunch and just enough heat to keep things interesting. It's the kind of sandwich that makes you stop talking because your taste buds have declared a moment of silence. And those fries? Real potatoes. Crispy outside, fluffy inside, and dangerously addictive. No frozen imposters here. Now let's discuss the "Elegant Dining Room." 😂 Apparently, in Chicago, "elegant" means long community tables where you're elbow-to-elbow with complete strangers while everyone collectively drips Italian beef juice on wax paper. It felt less like fine dining and more like Thanksgiving dinner with people you've never met. Yet somehow... it worked perfectly. Nobody cared what you looked like. Nobody cared if you had beef juice running down your arm. Everyone was united by one common goal: Destroying one incredible sandwich. That's Chicago in a nutshell. It's not trying to impress you with fancy chandeliers or white tablecloths. It'll hand you an amazing sandwich, a bottle of root beer, a seat next to a stranger, and basically say, "Eat first... we'll worry about manners later." And honestly? I wouldn't change a thing. ⭐ Final Rating: 9.8/10 If you're visiting Chicago and don't make time for Mr. Beef, you're missing one of the city's true food experiences. Come hungry, expect a line, embrace the "elegant" cafeteria-style seating, and prepare to understand why people happily wait for this sandwich. Sometimes the best meals don't come with fancy décor... they come wrapped in paper, dripping with flavor, and shared with a room full of strangers who all know they've made the right decision.

First time there. It was the best Italian beef I've ever had. Portions are great for the price. I had the Italian beef sandwich hot, with fries and a coke for $20. It was busy with a line out the door, but the service is fast. A great atmosphere if you like a fast paced fun environment. If you've ever seen The Bear, the atmosphere when the counter is busy is just like that at Mr. Beef. I'm definitely going back at least one more time. before I leave Chicago next week. If you can't drive up there, it's about a 20 minute ride via the Brown Line from the Loop.

Some things you just hope live up to the hype… Mr. Beef does!!! We were able to hit it just right with a little line, which moves at a good pace. The great guys behind the counter have 100 things going on but ensure you get the experience you’re looking for. It was a hot day when we visited and it was over 100 degrees behind that grill, bless them for hanging in there. Now the food, we got “The Bear” which was an Italian beef with half sweet and half hot peppers. Wow! I had had one other Italian beef during our visit and this one was superior. I also got a polish, deep fried at the suggestion of the cook, with everything on it and enjoyed that too! Did I mention the beef was good? Wow! Just do it! Go to Mr. Beef!

We had to make a stop at Mr. Beef this trip to Chicago. We arrived around 2:45 and thank goodness the line was short as we were hungry. We had the chili dog, hot & wet Italian beef and the meatball sandwich. The hotdog had a good snap to it when you took a bit and the chili was flavorful. The Italian beef tasted like home. Such a great flavor. And the bread was fresh! The meatball sandwich was fabulous. ( my favorite of the three). I definitely suggest getting one when they are available!!! They give you a lot of napkins, and you NEED them. 😂 The guys behind the counter were very friendly and accommodating. I will definitely suggest this place to anyone wanting a great sandwich!!
