Overall a solid experience! It’s a bit of of the way for the city center, and I don’t find it worth the trek to get there as a tourist. But pastry selection was really great and if I went back there are a few things I’d try that I bet would improve my experience! I got a croissant, which I’m a bit of connoisseur of, and it was very nice. Great flaky exterior and layered, buttery interior. I found it to be a bit dense and not as airy as I prefer, but a solid 7/10 croissant. I also got the meat pie, which I’ve discovered I’m not much of a fan of as a dish, so I’m not the right person to ask. The staff was friendly, nothing notable really. The ambiance is lacking something - it didn’t feel like a place I’d want to routinely sit at to have my pastry and coffee. It seems set up well for grab and go. But the display of pastries is fantastic and again, if it were convenient I’d go back and try a few of those incredible looking pastries.
Pettigrew Bakeries is nestled in a quiet street of Cardiff. It's well worth a visit if you appreciate good baking.
The sourdough is excellent. It has a proper crackling crust and an airy, chewy crumb with just the right amount of tang. You can tell they take their fermentation seriously; it shows in the flavour.
I'd also like it if they offered a form of quality flatbread (as I like it for a change from sourdough) as I could then get this at the same time as buying some sourdough.
Their sandwiches are very good, made with their own fresh bread and filled generously with quality ingredients. My only suggestion is that they have more choices that do not contain mayo (my husband gets indigestion from it and most of the meat-filled sandwiches also had mayo on them).
A good range of fresh pastries was also on offer. The coffee was reliably good too, which isn't always a given at bakeries.
The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, happy to chat about the bread and make recommendations without any fuss.
If you're after proper artisan baking in Cardiff, this is a solid choice.

Great coffee and pastries. Sitting area is a bit small. 2 lattes and 2 pastries £17.

Some of the best baked goods I have ever tasted! The flavours of the doughnuts and Queens change quite often so you can try lots of different ones. Really pleased to have such a high quality bakery nearby. Their sister café The Early Bird is also lovely (can't wait to visit again when they can reopen!). They also sell a good selection of deli/pantry items e.g jams, pasta, condiments etc and offer a delivery service.

The creme brûlée croissant has to be one of the best pastries I’ve ever had in my life!
Can’t wait to come back and try the rest. Was a bit pricey but understandable as everything is made fresh in house
