I’ve been on a mission to find Melbourne’s best cinnamon scroll, and that’s what brought me to Heart Bakes in Port Melbourne.
Tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood, it’s the kind of local café that instantly feels welcoming. There’s plenty of street parking, outdoor seating, and it’s incredibly dog-friendly—they even sell dog cookies at the counter, which was a lovely touch.
I only stopped by for a cinnamon scroll, but while waiting I noticed a great selection of baked treats, from gingerbread men and chunky chocolate cookies to Biscoff cookies and a lemon poppy seed cake that’s already convinced me to come back. My only small criticism is that the display cabinet could be organised a little better. Some of the items and their labels were hidden behind larger pastries, making them easy to miss.
Now, the reason I came—the $8 cinnamon scroll. It’s a generous size and not overly sweet, which I really appreciated. The icing was a little thicker and flakier than I personally prefer—I usually love a warm, gooey glaze. I later realised you can ask the staff to warm it up, which I think would have taken it to the next level.
Overall, it’s a really well-balanced cinnamon scroll that lets the cinnamon flavour shine without drowning it in sugar. If you’re a cinnamon scroll fan, Heart Bakes is definitely worth adding to your list. And next time, I’m finally trying that lemon poppy seed cake.
If you’re in Heart Bakes, you already know… this place is the cinnamon scroll destination in Melbourne right now!!
Tucked away in a quiet Port Melbourne street, this cosy little bakery has built a reputation following for its gooey, freshly baked scrolls.
According to other reviews as Sitchu, it’s all about that “warm, buttery scent” and comforting, small-batch baking that keeps people coming back!!
Think pillowy-soft scrolls, Levain-style cookies, and a counter full of sweet treats that are honestly hard to resist 😋😋
We obviously had to try the famous cinnamon roll…
And yes… it was really good. Soft, rich, and indulgent.
BUT (controversial take 👀)… I still favour Sebby’s Scrolls as my number 1 in Melbourne. There’s just something about that texture and flavour that still hits different for me.
What did completely surprise us though was the Reuben sandwich, hands down one of the best we’ve ever had. Perfectly balanced, rich, and packed with flavour. Honestly, I’d go back just for that.

Now I m always on the hunt for a good chicken sando and this take the no1 spot for me atm. It was absolutely delicious and even though it was toasted everything within was crisp fresh and not soggy. Delicious coffee aswell. Scroll was soft and not overpoweringly sweet and the garlic scroll was loaded with garlic in a delicious way

Heart Bakes is in an ideal location, tucked away from the main drag of Port Melbourne and nestled in the more quieter streets. However the atmosphere and vibe at Heart Bakes is pumping, especially on the weekends. After I completed a charity run, I was craving for some food after pounding the pavement for a couple of hours, The selection is tremendous with golden seared savoury toasties and popular sweet treats, including their popular iced coffee scrolls. The service is top notch even during peak popular times on the weekend. The value is great, with food well worth it. Bear in mind, the wait time can sometimes e a bit longer, due to the popularity but it is worth the wait.

I have been coming here pretty much since it opened in about 2020 and they are AMAZING. When I say they are the best cinnamon scrolls in the state I mean that with me whole heart. Food and coffee are always top notch and the staff are incredible. They even went above and beyond for me today and custom made a cake for me for my mum’s birthday (it was a giant version of the carrot cake they sell) and accommodated my request for extra icing. I’ve popped a picture of it here.
LOVE HEART BAKES AND WILL NEVER STOP COMING HERE
