A traditional Roman sweet bun (maritozzo), enriched and soft, split and generously filled with a rich, vanilla-flavored Italian pastry cream (crema pasticcera).
Maritozzo is an Italian dessert, traditionally a cream bun. It consists of bread generously filled with whipped cream, though the term originally referred only to the bread component. This cream-filled version is typical of Roman, Marche, and Abruzzo cuisine. In Puglia and Sicily, however, "maritozzo" refers to a braided sweet bread.
