A rich chocolate and cherry cake, offered as a dessert.
Black Forest cake, also known as Black Forest gateau, is a type of chocolate layer cake. It is traditionally made with cocoa powder, cherries, whipped cream, and Kirsch, a brandy distilled from morello cherries, and often decorated with dark chocolate. While its exact origins are disputed, a 1927 recipe is preserved in Radolfzell, Germany, and a festival dedicated to the cake is held in Todtnauberg. The cake became widely popular internationally in the second half of the 20th century.
