I visited Gwanghwamun Gukbap specifically for their signature clear pork soup. Knowing I had a health checkup the next day, I was looking for something nourishing yet very light, and this remarkably clean, grease-free broth was the perfect choice. They thoughtfully offer regular, large, and even children's portions to accommodate different appetites.
The meal is served with simple, classic accompaniments: fresh garlic and chili peppers meant to be dipped in doenjang (soybean paste).
As a helpful tip, I recommend asking the staff for some salted shrimp (saeujeot) to dip the tender pork slices in, as it elevates the savory flavors beautifully.
The dining space itself is exceptionally clean. Given the sheer volume of customers this popular establishment handles daily, the service can sometimes feel a bit brisk or rushed. While some might mistake this fast-paced communication for unfriendliness, it is perfectly understandable and practical when you observe how hard the staff are working to keep the tables turning.
If you visit in the evening, the atmosphere becomes quite lively with patrons enjoying drinks. Rather than being a nuisance, this gentle clamor feels like the authentic, nostalgic soundtrack of a classic Seoul soup house. I will certainly be returning, perhaps to try the Gochujang Jjigae or the Spicy Beef Soup next time.
The Ultimate authentic Korean cuisine restaurant! It was meant to be a small meal to have the famous clear pork soup with rice but we ended up ordered many fantastic dishes such as Beef rib stew, boils pork slices, spicy buckwheat noodles, and the famous blood sausage! None of the mentioned could be missed! Strongly suggest to queue before its opening time at 11 am!
A Michelin-recognized restaurant that's definitely worth visiting. The gukbap was outstanding with a rich, authentic broth that tasted like it had been simmering for hours. They use only beef brisket, and the meat was tender and flavorful. The service was friendly and efficient. If you're looking for a genuine Korean gukbap experience in Seoul, this is a great choice.
I was a bit unsure what to expect at Gwanghwamun Gukbap, but it was an interesting stop overall. The noodles were just average for me, and the pork had a noticeable smell that wasn’t quite to my taste. Still, I appreciated being able to try a local spot in Gwanghwamun, and the experience felt authentic enough to make it worth visiting once.
I tried the Special Pork Rice Soup at Gwanghwamun Gukbap. The broth was surprisingly clear, yet the flavor was incredibly deep and rich. It was clean without any gamey smell, making it easy to enjoy every last drop.
There was a bit of a wait during the weekday lunch rush, which was a little tiring. However, considering the prices in the Gwanghwamun area, the quality and portion size make it a great value. It's a solid spot when you want a satisfying, hearty meal.
