Signed, sealed, delivered: Burlingame finally has the restaurant (and bar!) it has been waiting for.
We went to the bar on opening night, October 1, and every seat was taken by 5:06 p.m. My wife and I and two friends got lucky and snagged two bar tables, and from there it was one hit after another.
The space: Bacchus Management Group (Spruce, The Village Pub, Selby's) took our landmark old post office and did right by it. Original details, decor and materials are woven in and shown off throughout. The main dining room is gorgeous, with its own bar at the back. The showstopper, though, is the Postmaster's Bar, set in the old Postmaster's office near the entrance. It's the most gorgeous bar around, and the ambiance is perfect: beautiful and refined without being stuffy.
The food: we shared our way through the bar menu, including the Postmaster's Burger (Bacchus's take on their locally famous Spruce and Village Pub Burgers), Snake River Farms beef tartare (maybe my favorite), citrus-cured hiramasa, flat iron steak frites and the autumn salad, among others. The side of duck fat fries was a perfect addition. Not a miss in the bunch. The drinks were top-notch too. I was too busy enjoying everything to take photos, so the few posted here are from my friend.
The service: everything you'd expect from a team with a Michelin-star pedigree. It felt like they had been open for years, and it was night one.
How good was it? We're going back tomorrow night for a full dinner in the main dining room.
If I have one quibble, it's that the secret is already out. The bar was full minutes after the doors opened, and it was standing room only the rest of the evening.
I'm a Burlingame native, and we've been longing for a place like this for ages. First-class in every sense.
