One must-do in Fukuoka is experiencing the Yatai street food scene, where mobile food stalls open from evening till late. These bustling spots are more than food stops; they’re lively gathering places where strangers share ramen, laughs, and stories. Though prices can be high, the warm, communal atmosphere makes it worthwhile.
Among the dishes I tried, Yaki Ramen (¥950) stood out—a pan-fried ramen with roasted pork, green onions, kikurage, and sesame seeds in a subtle tonkotsu sauce. While the smoky wok hei flavour was intense and noodles perfectly al dente, I found the sauce’s taste a bit understated, leaving me craving a richer umami hit.
The Yaki Mentaiko (¥900) was a Fukuoka specialty, with spicy seared cod roe that’s crisp outside yet tender and savoury within, a perfect match with alcohol. For something comforting, the Oden (¥1250) with light dashi, egg, radish, konjac, and fish cakes offered a warm, soothing flavour.
To complete the experience, I enjoyed a chilled Sake (¥550) with a sweet, crisp flavour, refreshing enough to enhance the Yatai vibe.
