We visited Cafe Bello for my wife's Mother's Day dinner because our son lives in Bayonne. We made our reservation a little too close to the weekend so the only available seating was in their rear patio enclosure/tent. This wasn't the greatest experience for a first visit to what seemed to be a very nice restaurant. They have two a/c units, one in each of the rear corners. One of them was blowing cold air on the back of my neck, which wouldn't have been so bad if it was 90° outside, but it was 60°. Also, the acoustics are nonexistent and one table had a group of women that seemed to be competing with each other to see who could be the loudest.
In any event, we also did not know that it was going to a limited Mother's Day Menu, but Oh Well... we made the best of it.
The saving day of the whole experience was the actual service and the food. The waiters are extremely attentive and informative.
The bread seems to be homemade, warm and plentiful. The anti-paste was interesting and more than enough to share. We also ordered the fried calamari which is has a nice light breading with a sliced pepperocini topping.
I ordered the Sunday Sauce with the only disappointments being the meatball and the ricotta. The meatball was small and bland looking and the dollup of ricotta was a little lacking. On the other hand, the sausage was perfect and braciola was more than ample. The portion of spaghetti was more than enough to bring some home, and the all important Sunday Sauce was indeed just like Nonna's.
My wife had the Penne Vodka which was spot on.
At the end of the day, we will revisit Cafe Bello, but only when we know we can be seated in the actual restaurant. Btw, the interior of this restaurant is absolutely gorgeous. They have a very nice bar, and a wood fired pizza oven..
