If you’re looking for a more straightforward flavor experience, perhaps try the à la carte menu. We had the tasting menu and it simply wasn’t what we expected really. I probably just didn’t understand it, but with all of the accolades I thought it would be undeniably tasty. I left feeling like most dishes were more for thinking about than enjoying the flavor, could have been their goal though. This was also a 3.5 hour experience from our reservation time until leaving, not really a complaint, more of a disclaimer.
For some praise, amazing cocktails, beautiful presentation, thoughtful storytelling.
I don’t like leaving reviews that aren’t exactly positive, but my subjective experience was disappointment. Hopefully some will find that the same experience that disappointed me will be incredibly intriguing to them.
Excellent Food... Falls down COLOSSALY on the "wine" pairings.
Came here for a special celebration with some friends. Decided on the Chef's Tasting Menu with the optional "wine" pairing.
And while the food itself was excellent, the pairings did nothing to enhance the meal. If anything, they complimented the various dishes and subtle flavors in much the same way a sledgehammer compliments horology.
Further, 50% of the beverages paired were oddball Agave-based spirits and liquors which simply had no place accompanying the various courses.
Absolute disaster...
Other than that, service was predictably excellent and the atmosphere pleasant enough in a sterile sort of way.
I'll be coming back here, but not for anything that has a "pairing."
Our experience at Alcalde was fantastic from the second we stepped in the door. The service was personable but polished without being intrusive. Cocktails were creative and well presented. Dishes were flavorful and interesting. We enjoyed it all!!
I made this reservation back in November and was genuinely excited when I received a call a week prior that it would be a special collaboration dinner featuring multiple headline chefs. Expectations were understandably high.
The evening began strong. However, by the 8th course, the experience began to unravel.
The dining room became uncomfortably hot, with the tequila pairing. Two courses were delivered incorrectly. And we got repeated course twice. The delay between the 8th and 9th course was excessive, stretching what was presented as a 3-hour experience into over 4.5 hours.
The coordination between dishes and pairings broke down. The final course arrived before the final tequila. Unlike earlier pairings, the extra añejo was served without explanation , this removed the storytelling element that was clearly part of the concept.
When I raised concerns about pacing, I was told there were four chefs in the kitchen. Respectfully, that should enhance execution, not excuse delays.
Offering complimentary drinks does not repair a breakdown in flow, temperature, or service tone.
At one point, after expressing frustration about repeated water refills while waiting for the next course, a staff member jokingly said, “I’m scared!” when he got to me to refill my water. In that moment, it did not feel humorous, it felt dismissive a joke gone bad.
The culinary talent is there. The hospitality and execution, on this night, were not.
This is not written in anger. It is written in expectation. At this level, accountability matters.
The restaurant is good however small though. We went to celebrate our anniversary and they offer two menus one oriented to live "the full experience" from chef for $180 dlls per person with the chance of paying additional $100 if you want to receive drinks prepared to match each of the 10 plates and the other option is a la carte. Of course is very focused to Mexican food with plates that offer pork, duck, fish, beans, guac, among other things. Taste and flavor combinations are good however nothing espectacular, being Mexican restaurant may imply the food is prepared with lots of spices hence this may not be ideal for all stomachs. Service is good they are always attentive to what you want or need. Mixology is also good, please ask for Margaritas with Mezcal and orange liquor, lime, some oil they put on it but drink is so refreshing. The restaurant have valet parking service but is not clear that you will need to drop your car going around the corner.
