It likely originated before the turn of the 20th century in cafes catering to Cuban workers in early immigrant communities like Tampa or Key West, Florida, and later became popular in Miami. This sandwich is typically prepared with ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all served on Cuban bread. While salami is sometimes included, especially in Tampa, it is generally not a feature of South Florida versions.
