The duck breast was 10/10! perfectly cooked and beautifully balanced with the wild rice and sauces and I enjoyed every single bite of it. The beef tenderloin wasn’t really my thing, but the tiramisu was a fun little surprise and definitely worth trying.
The setting is lovely, and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. My only gripe was the service… our waitress was warm with other tables but noticeably much cooler toward us. It was hard to ignore, especially since we’d just come from two other Calgary restaurants the day before where the hospitality was genuinely outstanding and neither of those were even fine dining. That contrast made it sting a little more.
Would’ve been a solid 5 stars otherwise.
“River Café, Calgary” — An Unexpectedly Disappointing Dining Experience
During our brief four-day getaway to Calgary and the Canadian Rockies, my wife and I spent our first day leisurely exploring downtown Calgary with close friends of several decades. The evening concluded with what we had anticipated would be a memorable fine-dining experience at the acclaimed River Café.
Unfortunately, the experience proved memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Our party of four opted for the five-course tasting menu, expecting the level of refinement and execution typically associated with one of Calgary’s most celebrated dining institutions. Instead, the meal ranged from merely above average to, at times, simply decent. While the dishes showcased an ambitious array of ingredients — some uncommon and intriguing — many felt overly busy in presentation and lacked harmony in both texture and flavour. Several courses came across as more conceptually interesting than genuinely satisfying.
Service throughout the evening was warm, polished, and professional. However, the pacing of the meal was exceptionally drawn out. A five-course dinner stretching beyond three hours became less of a leisurely culinary journey and more of a test of patience. One particularly lengthy delay of over 25 minutes appeared to result in a rushed subsequent course, with the pasta arriving noticeably undercooked and unpleasantly chewy.
Considering the dinner exceeded $200 per person, the overall experience fell well short of expectations. In a rather telling conclusion, the most memorable elements of the evening were the excellent sourdough bread and, perhaps, the chocolate dessert.
For a restaurant carrying such an esteemed reputation, the evening was ultimately a surprising and disappointing letdown.

This was a fantastic dinner. Everything we had was great. The red lentil hummus and the fish and game Board was great. There was this food I can only describe sourdough chips that was also amazing!!
I had the char and it was great. Others had the bison, lamb and beef and said it was great!! The location on a beautiful island park is second to none!! With lovely views and great atmosphere to and from dinner

After spending a beautiful, warm Sunday morning walking through the park, Riverside felt like the perfect place to settle in for brunch. The wait turned out to be completely worth it. We were seated on the patio, where the shade and relaxed atmosphere made it easy to enjoy the beautiful weather. Even though the restaurant was busy, it never felt crowded.
We ordered two pancake dishes along with two Braised Short Rib Eggs Benedict. The Eggs Benedict were incredibly rich, full of flavour, and the kind of indulgent brunch you leave thinking about long after the meal.
What really stood out, though, was the service. Every interaction with the waitresses was warm, friendly, and genuine, making an already enjoyable meal even better.
It’s easy to see why Riverside stays so busy on summer weekends. Between the beautiful patio, outstanding service, and satisfying comfort food, it’s a place I’d happily come back to. Just be sure to reserve early because those patio tables disappear fast.

We stopped by for a wonderful lunch. The location of the River Café Calgary is incomparably beautiful, and we truly enjoyed sitting outside. A huge thank you to Sam, who provided such attentive service and made this day of our vacation unforgettable! The food was also fantastic: the romanesco salad as an appetizer was super fresh, and both the burger and the flatbread for our main course were absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!
