Domaine MéO-Camuzet

Burgundy lovers: Be warned, your corked bottles will not be replaced!!! That's the policy of this estate! Thanks again for the way you treated me with the 2005 Vosne (both bottle and cork were returned)! Oh, and your 10% discount on your online store!? You might as well spit in your customers' faces: it would be less hypocritical. This estate doesn't live up to what they want us to believe… shameful

It's a busy time in Burgundy (visit on March 17, 2021). As wine merchants, we come to recharge and connect with our partner winemakers, and to discover and share with others. At Meo Camuzet, we had the opportunity to exchange a few words over the intercom, but they told us, "No visit, no tasting, because we have no wine to sell." Frankly, this is UNACCEPTABLE. They may not have had any wine to sell (today), but taking 5 minutes to chat face-to-face, 15 minutes for a short visit, and asking us to make an appointment for later would have been the bare minimum. They're skilled with wine, but not with hospitality.

In fact, it's been a full 30 years since I last encountered it. I recently tasted a Meo-Camuset Nuits-Saint-Georges 15 Au Beauteau and was deeply moved—a realization that I'd been truly impressed. Back when I was in my 40s and still didn't know the basics of wine, and I'd only tasted Meo-Camuset from a client list, I was impressed by how delicious it was, but back then my wine history was quite impressive, including a few bottles of Jayer's Echézeaux, Leroy's Grands Echézeaux, and Romanée. I started out collecting wines—a collection that would have been impossible in the provincial city where I live—and started small-scale sales and wine parties, hoping to introduce my friends to the beauty and etiquette of wine, but it's not easy. It was a challenge to lead a group of complete novices who didn't know what to do. After about 10 years, my health deteriorated, so I stopped. Now I'm retired, but I still run a group where I provide opportunities for my fellow enoteca sommeliers to learn about the depths of wine. So, I ordered Meo Camuzet's Vosne-Romanée 15 and the aforementioned Nuits-Saint-Georges 15 again. It was truly a chance that came around again. I uncorked them, waited an hour for them to open, then tasted them for a while, and the aroma and deep flavor that slowly rose were so moving that they brought back memories of the past. And so, I discovered Meo Camuzet again. Those who have tried it will understand: the impressive wine-making process is truly inspiring.
